Today in my First Year Seminar class we held an "Each On Teach One" or EOTO. There were two groups who gave their presentations. The first group did events that hurt race relations and the second group did events that hurt race relations.

Some of the events presented that hurt race relations were The End of the Resurrection in 1877. Also known as The Compromise of 1877 it was signed by Rutherford B.Hayes. Even though Reconstruction formally ended in 1877 violent oppositions in the South and the North resulted in Reconstruction ending much earlier in certain Southern states. Another event that played a part in hurting race relations was the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898. Also known as the Wilmington Massacre or Wilmington Race Riot, began on November 10th, 1898 when the White Conservatives Democratic Party conspired to overthrow the elected fusionist government.

The events that helped race relation were the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 affirmed the “equality of all men before the law” and prohibited racial discrimination in public places and facilities such as restaurants and public transportation. The law also made it a crime for anyone to facilitate the denial of such accommodations or services on the basis of colour, race, or “previous condition of servitude." Another event that helped race relations were the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments also known as the Reconstruction Amendments.
